❗️Pildong 2 Architects❗️
Pildong 2-ga Architects attempts various architectural works that remember the local landscape and intervene in social needs. Rather than packaging familiar materials as 'novelty,' we strive to plan rationally based on the senses gained on-site and experiential scale.
We aim for architecture where the delicate attitude created in this way remains naturally like the urban background rather than standing out excessively.
Does 'Pildong 2-ga Architects' have a unique philosophy or set of values?
Stimuli and observations encountered in daily life often serve as the starting point for design. Interests gained from the textures and details of objects, as well as streetscapes, have acted as a driving force for my work, and I believe they make architecture more flexible. I think that rather than images consumed like trends, things discovered in everyday life gain greater significance when they function like 'parts' in the design process.
👣 If there is a keyword you would definitely like to mention when describing 'Pildong 2-ga Architects', what would it be?
I think experience is an indispensable part of talking about our office. Since we opened relatively early, I had to learn a lot by facing challenges head-on on my own, and I encountered new situations with every project. Although there were things I regretted about each project, I believe the time I spent continuously striving not to repeat those mistakes in the next one ultimately accumulated into valuable experience.
It may not be an extraordinary experience, but I believe that one’s own unique color is created depending on how each person accepts and cherishes their own experiences. In our office, people with diverse backgrounds are creating new experiences together within the single space of Pil-dong, and I think that process naturally manifests in the architecture.
👣 How did you find what you like, Director?
As graduation approaches, I think there comes a time when you feel uncertain about which firm to join. Since ateliers and large firms differ in their methods and environments, I felt it is necessary to first consider how they work and create architecture within the space, rather than simply choosing based on size alone. I believe it is important to ask yourself what kind of architecture you truly love during that process.
Before graduating, I already had a clear idea of the architectural style I liked, and I think it was only when I selected a firm based on those criteria that I truly felt I was growing while working. So, while the size of the company is important, I believe it is more important to first reflect on what kind of architecture you actually like.
👣 You received the 2024 Young Architect Award. If we were to divide your life into before and after winning, are there any changes?
It seems you are showing interest in our office and our work, and we are truly grateful for that. However, I do not feel that our internal structure or our attitude toward projects has changed significantly before and after winning the award.
Rather, through this award, I realized that a truly diverse range of design firms and architects have been doing excellent work in their own ways, and at the same time, I think it was a moment when I became aware of how the outside world views our firm. Taking that perspective as an opportunity, I began to contemplate what direction we can take to pursue healthier work in the future.
