👉 IF Architectural Research Institute (hereafter referred to as ';IF';) is an architectural and research group based in Seoul and Manila, led by Director Lee Seo-ju, Director Kim Hyo-jung, and Professor Kim Dong-il of Kyunghee University. They view architecture as a powerful tool for creating solidarity between users/community/environment, rather than a simple art of expression, and they challenge existing architectural types and paradigms by solving problems through constant questioning and exploration.
👣 Does ';IF Architectural Research Institute'; have its own philosophy or values?
👉 It starts from the constant question of "IF (what if)." We view architecture not as a fixed answer, but as an open process of exploring possibilities and potential, and we are not afraid to challenge conventions and types. "IF" also means ';Informed'; and it contains the attitude of responding to context, technology, materials, and social issues and reflecting them in the design. We consider the process as well as the result to be an important part of creation, and we aim for architecture that encompasses functionality, emotion, sustainability, and experimentation.

👉Through our independent operating method that combines architectural practice and research, we realize an expanded approach beyond design, and it becomes a foundation for members to experience a wider spectrum of architecture.

👉 Rather than simply the results, we value the ability to accurately recognize problems, the ability to creatively and logically solve them, and the ability to persuasively express the process. This is a standard that reflects IF’s perspective of focusing on whether the applicant has the attitude to proactively lead the entire architectural thinking process, beyond simply creating high-quality results.
👣What should I prepare to help me prepare for job hunting?

👉 Rather than a high-quality result, we value the attitude of approaching, analyzing, and solving an issue from various perspectives. Therefore, when preparing for employment, it is necessary to interpret the problem from various angles and try to solve it in various ways. It is also important to express the design intent richly by utilizing various media such as drawings, renderings, models, and diagrams.
👣I'm curious about specific cases where you challenged existing architectural types and paradigms, and how you overcame the difficulties in the process.
👉A representative example is an architectural experiment based on DFMA (Design for Manufacture and Assembly). It is a process of designing a space based on manufacturing and assembly, and examining the structural method, connection details, and logistics plan, including the OSC (Off-site construction) system, under new conditions. There were technical barriers and unprecedented difficulties in detail design, but we are solving them step by step through collaboration with experts in various fields and realizing a new type of architecture.
👣I'm curious about the future direction that ';IF Architectural Research Institute' is pursuing and its response strategy for sustainability and smart technology.
👉IF Architectural Research Institute reinterprets the concept of 'Master Builder' in a modern way, and is building an integrated process of design and production through in-depth research on materials, geometry, and production processes. The core direction is sustainable architecture and enhancing the preservation value of buildings, and actively introduces 21st century technological advancements and artificial intelligence (AI) to popularize advanced craftsmanship and connect it to the actual design and construction process. This philosophy and research are being applied to actual architectural projects, and in the future, we will continue to build a future architectural ecosystem where sustainability, technological integration, and design innovation are in harmony.
