The Namyang Marian Shrine Cathedral is a shrine built on the site where nameless martyrs were brought and martyred during the Byeongin Persecution.

[ Mario Botta's Cathedral ]
💡 The cathedral is situated within a deep valley. The two massive towers at the front serve as the symbolic center of the entire sanctuary, while the main body is buried deep in the ground, blending naturally with the surrounding terrain. It is a method in which the architecture creates a stronger presence within the landscape rather than overwhelming it.
[ A space that draws in light ]
💡Beke’s ‘pleasant darkness’ is not a blockage to withstand the strong Jeju sunlight, but rather a device that allows one to comfortably view the outside landscape through deep arrangements and dark finishes. The dim interior contrasts with the bright garden, bringing to mind light and shadow, and the grain of the wood more clearly.
[ Order built with bricks ]
💡 The entire building is composed of approximately 50 bricks. The exterior walls consist of various types of clay bricks and red granite, and the horizontal joints and brick patterns create delicate shadows even within the solid texture. This material texture further clearly reveals the symbolism of the cathedral.
[ Backside Arena ]
The arena, located at the rear, is a south-facing space bathed in sunlight, designed to provide a warm and comfortable atmosphere. It is intended not only as a place for quiet contemplation and meditation but also to accommodate small-scale performances or outdoor masses.
