“The Eighty-Sixth, Containing Space”: Breath Urban

📌Breath Urban📌
Sum Urban is a bakery café building located on a main street in downtown Cheonan. The owner of the building requested an urban version of the existing café ';Sum' run by his parents. The architect wanted to create a space where people can feel peace in a complex urban environment.

[Enhancing visibility through contrast with the outside]
💡The Breath Urban Project overcame its disadvantageous location on a busy street by securing visibility in a different way from the surrounding commercial districts. In contrast to flashy signs, the rectangular building finished with exposed concrete was double-layered with polycarbonate panels to minimize external decoration.
💡The building was designed to have a simple yet powerful presence by letting in soft light during the day and by lighting up like a giant light at night. This made the building stand out even in its complex surroundings.

💡The core of the building's interior is a triangular courtyard, which forms a small forest-like space with maple trees, rocks, and wildflowers. A void space is placed in the center so that the courtyard can be viewed from anywhere inside the building.
💡The interior is designed with minimal decoration, allowing people to naturally enjoy the courtyard and the soft sunlight streaming in.
💡The second floor features a gravel terrace and a stepped deck, allowing guests to enjoy the breeze and look out over the courtyard, further emphasizing the connection with nature.
[ Quiet atmosphere ]
💡In the Breath Urban Project, the architect designed it to create a calm atmosphere. The building seen from the outside is composed of exposed concrete and polycarbonate to give a simple yet cold impression, but when you enter the building, soft natural light seeps in, and the calm atmosphere centered around the courtyard is emphasized.
💡The interior design consists of minimal decoration, and tables and chairs are placed low. In addition, the structure of hanging the second-floor slab to the roof with steel wires was used to maximize the sense of openness while eliminating visual distractions.
